Bleed
 
Bleed area refers to the edges of a document. You should extend any background colors or design elements to the edges, to prevent the occurrence of an unwanted white border at the edges of the document.

Trim Marks
 
The finished size of a document is trim line or trim mark. Though the document is cut close to the trim line this cut can take place anywhere between the bleeds and the safe margin due to the mechanical tolerances involved in printing. For this reason, it is vital to keep the important images and text within the safe margin.

Full Bleed vs. Trim Size
 
When should you use full bleed size to create a document?
We suggest you to create a document at the full bleed size when working with an illustration program like Adobe Illustrator or a photo-editing program like Corel Photo-Paint. This prevents the visibility of white edges at the border after the trimming of a final product.

When should you use trim size to create a document?
Using trim size is beneficial when working in a layout program (such as QuarkXPress or Adobe InDesign). A particular amount of bleed can be included to your product (.137").

Safe Area or Safe Margins
 
The borders inside the place where the cut takes place are the safe margins or safe areas. You should ensure that all vital information is within this safe margin (at least .137" from the edge) to prevent the information from cutting when the document is trimmed. This information may include names, phone numbers, addresses, or logos.

Resolution
 
What do you mean by resolution?
Resolution is a term that means the amount of detail in the image or the number of dots per inch (dpi) of an image. When the resolution is high, it means the image is detailed, file is larger and the time to upload would also be longer. Therefore, the documents prepared for upload should be of 300 dpi at 100% of the final print size.

RGB vs. CMYK
 
RGB (Red, Green and Blue) refer to the shades used by screen displays whereas CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black) are those colors that are used in the printing process. A point to note is that JPEG files are many times in RGB.

The document should be created in CMYK mode. It is so because the colors you see on the screen should match the final printed product. The colors in the printed products may differ slightly if the document is created in RGB. The monitor will not be able to reproduce various bright values in print.

Converting Fonts to Outlines

Vector vs. Raster
 
What do you mean by Raster Images?
Raster images consist of pixels that are a collection of tiny dots. These pixels create an illusion of a single image when they are small and placed together. When subtle gradations of color are necessary raster images work wonders. A disadvantage with a raster image is that its quality suffers when they are enlarged or transformed. This happens because the image contains a fixed number of pixels. These images also have large file size.

What do you mean by Vector Images?
Vector images define each component of an image. They use mathematical equations for the purpose. As a result, these vector images can retain high quality at any size. You can use vector graphics created in a desktop publishing program whenever possible.

Digital Imaging
With the use of digitized images from a variety of sources, you can create printed products on our web site.

Various images, photos and designs can be sourced from a digital camera, scanner or the Web. For the best printing results you can save any image at approximately 300-dpi at 100% output size. The resolution will also increase if you shrink an image on a product. For instance, an image will have 150-dpi at 4" x 6" if it is captured at 600 x 900 pixels. You can also reduce the dimensions on the product to 2" x 3" to print at 300-dpi.


Digital Camera Images
You will find varied settings for resolutions in many cameras. Camera's high resolution depends on the number of pixels contained in the camera. Your camera must be at a high enough resolution to result in 300 DPI at the intended photo print size.

After photographing the subject, you cannot increase the resolution of the photograph except by reducing its printed dimensions (after you upload an image). If you want to crop an image, you must be careful with it. Cropping might reduce the number of pixels.


Images from a Scanner
You should preset the scanner to a proper resolution before capturing the image. Various scanners default to 150-dpi (or spi). You can set your scanner resolution so that it results in 300-dpi at the image's final print size. If the scanned image has less dpi than required, or it is smaller than the recommended size, then you can either rescan the original image at a higher resolution, or use it for a smaller printed area.


Web Images
Web Images are mainly at a resolution of 72-dpi. This resolution is low for quality printing. Copyright laws protect these web images. These are the reasons due to which we do not recommend you to use images from the web.
